Ezboard Inc. Victim Of Vicious Internet Attack
By D.L. McCracken
Jun 1, 2005, 11:30
Ezboard systems touted as the "largest online community network site on the planet", was virtually brought to its knees Tuesday as the result of "a very precise and malicious internet attack resulting in the loss of a significant amount of current and historical board postings and interrupted services across all systems", according to Ezboards' CEO, Robert Labatt's message to Ezboard members.
Tuesday's attack caused denial of service errors throughout the system and affected millions of users across approximately 9,000 message boards. The attack resulted in massive data loss, both current and historical from message boards within the system. Many Boards also lost accumulated monetary funds stored within their communities that is used toward Board subscription services.
Labatt is ensuring Ezboards members that their personal information including credit card info remains safe and was not touched during the attack.
Most message boards were accessible within several hours of the initial attack yesterday and Board owners are currently assessing the amount of data loss in their communities. Ezboards is warning their members that although they will do their best in restoring lost data, complete data restoration may not be possible. Repairs will be underway for the next week to 10 days.
Ezboards is also vigorously investigating the attack itself and those responsible. They are asking that members contact Ezboards if they hear or read anything at all about the attack.
Ezboards was founded in 1999 by Vanchau Nguyen and is based in San Fransico. Its hosted Web platform relies on subscription services and advertisement as their primary source of revenue.

Ezboard Inc.'s CEO, Robert Labatt has stated that a $5,000 reward is being offered to the person or persons who "provide [Ezboards] with factual information that leads to the direct arrest and conviction of the attacker". Labatt, in his latest update to Ezboard members cautioned that the legal department are not interested in "conspiracy theories, finger pointing or childish pranks".
Labatt stressed that they are interested in "community postings or blog entries where the attacker is bragging about the attack and other factual, real information". The reward will be split equally should more than one person submit pertinent information about the attacker(s). All serious leads can be sent to legal@ezboard.com . Please include in the body of the email the following:
-a link to the original material AND
-a screen capture of the original material OR at least a copy & paste of the original material.
The Ezboard system was the victim of a malicious and extremely damaging denial of service attack last Monday. The attack virtually shut down 8,000 message boards across all servers and it was several hours before Ezboard staff were able to bring the system back online.
In Labatt's latest update message posted today, he expressed deep dismay and sorrow that the massive loss of current and historical data from all Boards would not be fully restored. Labatt explained that data restoration began mere hours after the attack and staff successfully restored thousands of boards on more than 8 servers.
The next stage of the restoral process began on Thursday afternoon and because of the sheer server size the process will be slow - approximately 6 hours each but because Ezboard is utilizing a new recovery process, they expect no loss of data posted after the attack.
Members were assured today that all Community Chest funds would be restored and all Gold Boards will be receiving credits to be determined at a later date.
Labatt has been extremely forthcoming in his regular updates to Ezboard members. This latest message is his sixth update since last Monday
